Carl William Clay
Carl William Clay, 84, of Mount Hope, died Monday, June 11, 2001, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness. Born July 24, 1916, at Sand Lick, he was the son of the late James Averil and Ninanza Cantley Holstein Clay. Mr. Clay was a retired coal miner with New River Coal Co., Summerlee, Garden Ground and Siltex Mines. He retired from G.C. Murphy Co. in 1970 as a stockroom manager. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and loved his gardening. He was a member of the Senior Citizens Bowling League at Leisure Lanes in Beckley where he received many awards for his bowling. He was preceded in death by his stepmother, Hazel Evans Clay; his wife, Lesta Frances Craigo Clay; and two brothers, James Percy Clay and Charles Blume Clay. Survivors include three daughters, Ruth Woolard and her husband, Donald, of Mount Hope, Vicki Bolen and her husband, Mike, of Beckley and Carol Bennett and her husband, Bill, of Mount Hope; three sons, Loren Clay and his wife, Connie, of Cleveland, Frank Clay and his wife, Debbie, of Nimitz and Steve Clay and his wife, Kay, of Oak Hill; four sisters, Anna Jean Payne of Roanoke Rapids, N.C., Marion I. Qualls of Huntington, Lychia R. Jenkins of Bradley, and Jewell L. Clay of Raleigh, N.C.; a brother, Ernest Clay of Stanaford; 25 nephews and 18 nieces; and a longtime friend, Helen Richmond. Service will be 1 p.m. Friday, June 15 at Kilsyth Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. Darrell McNeely officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley. Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Tyree Funeral Home, Mount Hope. Arrangements by Tyree Funeral Home, Mount Hope.
